Real World(s) Captured in Fictional Media In-Person / Online
The presentation will focus on how to incorporate science fiction media to illustrate real-world consequences in an ENGL 102 assignment. Discuss the development of the assignment and how students can benefit from not only incorporating scholarly research, but fictional media into their papers.
Learning Outcomes: Attending students and faculty will discover how to blend fictional and non-fictional sources to create more compelling and persuasive writing, with the following outcomes: Improving reader buy-in and building interest when writing about controversial or challenging issues; Showcasing the need to synthesize and evaluate sources across all media types both non-fictional and fictional Illustrating the importance of an issue, i.e., the zeitgeist or cultural “moment,” through fictional media; Using science fiction media to suggest potential solutions to complex real-world problems.
