Literacy is Liberty: Challenges to Information Access and Behavior Posed by Politics and Policies Online
Responses to censorship efforts generally focus on the specific books being targeted and the contents of those books. However, it is also vital to examine the socio-cultural goals underlying censorship. In the US, a wide range of political and policy decisions are currently being made at all levels of government to limit information access and reshape information behavior, of which censorship is only one obvious aspect. This presentation will explore the current challenges to information access and information behavior, as well as the risks they pose to literacy and the literate population necessary for a functional democracy.
Learning Outcomes: Recognize the goals of censorship movement; Identify the impacts of censorship on information access and information behavior; Connect political positions and policy processes to state of information literacy in society; and Appreciate the importance of literacy to civic participation and democratic governance.
