The Ethics of AI-Generated Art: Who Owns the Pixels? In-Person / Online

As AI-generated art floods social media feeds, design portfolios, and commercial advertising, questions of authorship, ownership, and ethical use have taken center stage. This session explores the complex intersection of copyright law, fair use, and moral responsibility in the age of AI-generated visuals.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will be better equipped to navigate the emerging and often uncertain legal, ethical, and practical questions surrounding AI-generated images. Together, we will explore current U.S. Copyright Office guidance, evolving interpretations of fair use, and how ownership may be determined when humans and AI collaborate. Through real-world examples and discussion, participants will consider best practices for attribution, transparency, and responsible integration of AI art. Students, faculty, and librarians will leave with a more transparent framework for asking the right questions and making informed decisions as the technology and its implications continue to evolve.
