Navigating AI in the Writing Center: How AI Can Assist, Not Replace, the Writing Process Online

“Navigating AI in the Writing Center: How AI Can Assist, Not Replace, the Writing Process” is an interactive workshop designed to help students critically engage with the growing role of artificial intelligence in academic writing. Through demonstrations, group discussions, and evaluation activities, participants will explore both the potential benefits and the limitations of tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly. The session emphasizes academic integrity, encouraging students to think critically about when and how AI can be responsibly integrated into their writing process. Students will compare AI-generated and human-written texts, practice identifying key differences, and reflect on issues of credibility, originality, and authorship. In addition, participants will discuss the ethical implications of using AI, including proper attribution and citation practices. By highlighting the importance of critical thinking and source evaluation, the workshop reinforces that AI can be a valuable support tool but cannot replace human insight, creativity, and the personalized guidance provided in a Writing Center. This session ultimately empowers students to use AI responsibly, making thoughtful choices that strengthen, not weaken, their academic work.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, students will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate AI-generated versus human-written texts for credibility, depth, and originality. 2. Identify the strengths and limitations of AI in the writing process. 3. Understand how to responsibly integrate AI tools without compromising academic integrity. 4. Recognize ethical considerations, including citation and attribution of AI use. 5. Reflect on how Writing Centers can support the balanced use of AI tools while maintaining focus on student voice, critical thinking, and authentic academic engagement.
