Information Literacy in the Age of Artificial Information: Challenges and Opportunities

Information Literacy in the Age of Artificial Information: Challenges and Opportunities Online

The world is awash in bad information, and artificial intelligence is making it worse. But can AI-assisted information literacy exploration also be part of the solution? Mike Caulfield, online information literacy expert, will draw from recent work to demonstrate some of the weirdness of working with large language model technologies to verify and contextualize information, including both frustrations and benefits. Caulfield will outline the skills and understandings students need to navigate this new environment. This program will provide specific strategies for students and others to guide AI use as well as outline significant concerns for the future if we cannot align educational efforts to address new realities.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Analyze the impact of AI on information credibility and literacy. 2. Apply AI-informed strategies to evaluate and contextualize digital content. 3. Understand the significant concerns for the future of AI-use in education.
